IIRC Bernhard Moitessier in "Joshua" was in the lead, before he abandoned...steelboat....
But now it's "fibreglass only"...

Interesting topic.
I think the Vancouver 34 might be a smart choice. Much to my surprise the design is allowed despite the rule requiring that the rudder must be attached to the trailing edge of the keel.
The rudder on the Vancouver must be stretching the rule.
Pity the Vancouver 36 is just a little bit over the maximum length. It has the same rudder configuration but it's about 36 ft 10 going on memory.
Guido Cantini had entered a Vancouver 34 in the 2022 race but he did not start. He is having another go at the 2026 race.

Suhaili was/is wooden, and won it. Her wooden replica was permitted to race in the first edition, but was abandoned. I thought there was going to be Joshua "one-design" class at one point.

Only one obvious choice: Whichever one can be bought and old fastest for a bit of profit so the money can be put toward a boat that actually sails.

The criteria used for this race are silly and pretentious. I am fine with the year of design, might make it even earlier, like 1980, and the length restrictions. Other than that any mono should qualify. If the traditional long keel boats are best for this sort of challenge so be it, but I am reasonably certain that conservatively designed fin keelers and centerboarders would both survive and dominate.

Tetley on Victress believed the misinformation from Donald Crowhurst and pushed his boat too hard and she sank

How about a new Rustler 36 built for the race?, without furniture.

Saltrum/saga 36 would be my choice. Or a Hans Christian 33 (or 34). Neither boat is readily available anywhere, so the the question is sort of moot.

you mistake the idea behind the GG race:
it is to do something silly, like having your tooth extracted without anaesthetics.

These clunkers can only go so fast, so go find the boat with the fastest hull speed that you think would stay in one piece.

I did notice that last time the spinnaker poles were really, really long!
